Press release For immediate release

NINH THUAN – September 8, 2011 – Diageo Vietnam, in partnership with East Meets West Foundation (EMW) and local authorities, held a ceremony to hand over drinking water treatment systems to 24 schools in six districts in Ninh Thuan Province. Mr. Stephane Gripon, Diageo Vietnam's new General Manager, joined representatives of EMW and local authorities at the handover of the project, which is expected to benefit more than 12,000 pupils.

With funding from Diageo Vietnam, East Meets West installed an ultra-violet water filtration system—ensuring an accessible source of safe water for pupils during the school day—at 24 schools in the districts of Thuan Bac, Thuan Nam, Bac Ai, Ninh Son, Ninh Hai and Phan Rang city The project follows the handover in 2010 of a water system in Xom Bang, Bac Son Commune, Thuan Bac District, Ninh Thuan Province that was financed by a similar partnership between Diageo and EMW.

These projects are parts of Diageo's global "Water of Life" program, one of the company's flagship corporate social responsibility initiatives, aimed at reducing poverty in areas where the company operates. Noted Mr. Gripon: "In an effort to improve the quality of life and health for thousands of Vietnamese people, this project is part of our commitment to provide sustainable development solutions for local community. We hope that this UV water treatment system will provide pupils here with better learning conditions as well as help to prevent the onset of harmful water-borne illnesses."

In addition to the handover ceremony, 10 Diageo employees, from a variety of departments and locations within Vietnam, took this opportunity to meet some of the pupils, engaging in games that were both interactive and educational about the importance of clean water and hygiene.

Mr. , Principal of _______ school, noted of Diageo's donation: "The lack of clean water and sanitation in many schools in rural communities in Vietnam contributes to a challenging learning environment and makes it hard for us to instill the importance of good hygiene to our pupils. Thanks to the generous donation of Diageo, I believe that we will have a better and healthier facility to nurture and educate young generation of Ninh Thuan Province."

According to a survey by the Office of Preventive Health and Environment (OPHE) in March 2008, as many as 50% of rural schools lack access to clean drinking water. The survey was conducted by the OPHE in eight ecological regions across the country. The survey revealed that 5% of the schools use water from rivers, lakes, or ponds; 20% have no access to water; and more than 52% have no drinking water for pupils during the school day.

Ms. Minh Chau Nguyen, Country Director of East Meets West Foundation, noted: "Thanks to Diageo, we at EMW have been able to respond to the needs for clean drinking water in rural schools in Ninh Thuan. This project marks another milestone in the long-term partnership between EMW and Diageo Vietnam and demonstrates our shared dedication to removing obstacles to education in disadvantaged communities." East Meets West Foundation has installed ultraviolet and ozone-treated drinking water systems for schools across the country, providing more than 50,000 pupils with access to drinking water during their school day. "We highly appreciate the support of Diageo Vietnam and look forward to working together on another project in the future," added Ms. Nguyen.
