PSI/Vietnam continues to expand its diarrheal disease prevention program by applying private sector approaches to motivate rural households without access to piped water to treat drinking water and wash hands with soap. Between January and March 2012, PSI strengthened social marketing of Safewat household water treatment and handwashing among families with young families in rural districts of An Giang, Can Tho and Dong Thap provinces.

Evidence-based communications, using a variety of appropriate channels including heavily illustrated print, market and community events and commune loudspeaker campaigns are used to motivate preventive behavior at the household level. PSI/Vietnam’s sales team increased efforts to establish FMCG, pharmaceutical and commune clinic outlets stocking, displaying and promoting Safewat together with IEC materials promoting handwashing. As of March 2012, PSI/V has established approximately 300 remote rural commercial outlets selling Safewat. During the first quarter of 2012, PSI/Vietnam piloted a partnership with the Women’s Union in An Giang to provide door-to-door sales of Safewat to families in the most remote, rural districts—families without access to piped water and with limited access to existing commercial outlets. Sales data and monitoring visits suggest the pilot has achieved initial success, as a result of careful planning, management and supervision.
